This photo collection from the Faroe Islands is a small time capsule from a place that felt extremely remote and wonderfully indifferent to the outside world when I visited it more than 20 years ago. We flew in on a small propeller plane from Bergen.
Tourism was limited. There were no viral viewpoints or carefully curated itineraries—just narrow roads, shifting weather and villages shaped by fishing, sheep farming, and the North Atlantic.
Shot on early digital equipment, they capture everyday scenes. Seen today, they document not only a dramatic landscape, but also a moment in time—before the Faroe Islands stepped fully onto the international travel stage.
